I'd be AWFULLY surprised if corporate Wal*Mart was so stupid as to have

They aren't. You are surprised that Paulie posted something that he
just made up ? What, are you NEW ?

C'mon, if Paul says it, it has to be true. Right? RIGHT?!?!?!?

K-Mart has the same rule BTW.

Many years ago I worked in the regional offices of Kmart. Unless
policy has changed drastically since their merger with Sears, this is
untrue.

Lots changes in "many years." If you want an example of good employee/employer relations you can look at the Costco model. They actually treat employees fairly, if not so extravagantly in pay. Costco consistently gets negative marks on Wall Street for its "excessive labor costs." Like that is a crime? Excessive being defined as time on the clock and paid holidays? I suppose if they whipped their employees till their skin was flayed off their backs it would be a plus stockwise?

You know, Paul, you're welcome to run as socially conscious a business as you'd like. As a matter of fact, a modern failing of many companies is not valuing your institutional experience.

It's difficult, however, to store up much institutional experience in shelf stocking, floor sweeping, cash register punching, etc... Not that these are not worthy jobs. I've done them all, myself (and would do them again in a pinch).

But you'll notice I'm not stocking shelves, or sweeping floors, or flipping burgers now. I used those jobs to keep body and soul together (and support my family) as I went to college nights. Now I'm designing database apps.

This is where a lot of us un-compassionate, knuckle-dragging right-wing whackos got their perspective. We've been there, and we realize that even in the age of Obama, we live in the best country in the world where an immigrant fresh off the boat can start a business, take care of their family and send each and every one of their 11 kids to college. Oh, Obama will hamstring them, and make it more difficult for them to reach their dream so some other Democrat can get $1 or so more at the local "do you want fries with that" emporium, but it's still a damn sight better than Laos, Vietnam, Haiti, Cuba, or where ever it is they came from.

So I hope it was a lesson to your friend who got fired from Wal-Mart. Go to college, get training, and get a real job (state college is still free for residents of California, isn't it?).
