You did *NOT* just call God a really big bully, did you?
I don't even want to be in the same purgatory with you when they make you smoke whatever you're getting for that one!
;)
No. I'd imagine Satan feels that way. After all, he wanted to run things his own way, and God really didn't like his plans and said: "Sorry Lucifer. It's my way or the highway." And Lucifer said: "Non serviam" and took the highway.
Which says quite a bit about God's internal management
style. Playing clear favourites and making no effort to
keep the existing workforce sweet is a recipe for disastrous
labour relations in any enterprise ...
Indeed, unless you're running a pirate ship. Have you ever read an economics primer for pirates? (And no, Misc, I didn't just call God a pirate :))
(Right, I got that! :) EPfP is a GREAT book! :)
It was one of the most fascinating things I ever read.
(Also, all programming interview questions that involve pirates are BS. But I enjoy them, anyway ;)
I didn't get that, but I did get the puzzle that tests if you think "outside the box". Well the first time you fail it, then you look it up and it tests if you can remember a silly puzzle.
Oh, and don't forget -- there are no toilets. Scripture
specifically refers to damnaiton WITHOUT relief.
:-)
Heh, did you used to write for G. Larson...?
Enslaved Soul <raising hand>: "Satan, oh, Mr. Sataaaaan! I have to pee..."
Man is still fallen and sinful. It's in our nature as fallen humans. We have free choice not to sin, but it's really difficult. Sometimes we fail. But God paid the original price of original sin opening the way to heaven. But we still have to walk the walk.
I always considered that a depressing approach. It sets us
up to fail.
Sure. But we have confession. The wipe away all your sins free card.
I always considered that a depressing approach. It sets us up to fail, then be controlled by our failures by mere men.
If God wants to forgive me, he can listen to my apology first hand!
That's fine, you can do that, but you miss out on the grace of the confessional. I like to go in for a good scrubbing every so often (not enough, I'm afraid).
Those who wanted to find food for their starving children could generally present themselves to the local church or monastery and they would be fed
And this is how welfare programs SHOULD be run -- without government interference! :)
Now turn it round.
If you see a parent who sets impossible-to-follow rules, who
issues commands that the kids are incapable of understanding
and then [sets them loose in an environment that tempts them
into breaking them, if he sets the
barrier for success and approval at nothing short of
perfection -- what sort of messed-up kid will we get then?
That's a pretty bad parent.
So now you're saying that God is a bad father...?!
Man, I'm not even going to smoke cigars in purgatory, for fear of inadvertently getting one that was near one of yours...!
But what of the parent who sets difficult rules for their child to follow, forgives them each and every time they come to him asking, but still make them pay for the consequences of their actions. What sort of parent is that?
Depends on the parent. Are we still talking God? "Abusive." If you or I tried that stuff, we'd be sitting in jail (assuming we didn't already get the chair...)
Well, just think of poor Job. A righteous man who was the *** of a sucker bet. Satan is betting God (who is omnicient) that He doesn't know for sure what Job will do.
Maybe Satan knew it too and just wanted to see Job suffer. Satan is like that.
But the Good News is that the priced has been paid for me, in full, 2000 years ago.
Me & Alex, too, right?
(If not: why not?)
Of course. The blood of the cross makes it possible for you to get to heaven.
I now have the chance to live forever.
(a) To clarify, you live forever either way, right? Just that one way you suffer, and you're exciting about living forever in heaven, right?
(b) "Chance to"...? So there's a chance you might NOT spend eternity in heaven? Oh, if you reject God, right?
(c) ...But, if that were to happen, it would all be part of His Plan, right? So, either way, you can be excited about participating in The Grand Scheme -- right?
Yes, yes and yes.
