You make a big deal about non-smokers enjoying their steak and wine
without tobacco, and how smokers prefer theirs with.
It seems VERY relevant that non-salt & pepper eaters enjoy their steaks
(and, one presumes, their wine) without salt & pepper, while you and I
prefer the addition of those things.
I heard of a survey here in Wisconsin not too long ago that said both smokers and non-smokers preferred smoke-free restaurants...here is what a google search found--
http://www.wish-wi.org/restaurant_operators.htm
a.. 76% of Wisconsin adults do not smoke, and that number is growing.
b.. 20-30% of smokers prefer smoke-free dining (Gallop Poll).
c.. Most other smokers will acquiesce to the smoke-free eatery at the request of their friends or family.
d.. Only 2-3% of the population are die-hard smokers who may actually avoid a smoke-free restaurant.
e.. For every smoker a restaurant might lose, they stand to gain two nonsmokers in return. (That's a pretty good trade, and one that is substantiated by the restaurant industry's own polls.)
f.. Waitresses, who work in restaurants which allow smoking, have nearly four times the lung cancer risk and nearly triple the heart disease risk as do women in other occupations (per a University of California - San Francisco study).
g.. Since 1992, the number of smoke-free restaurants in Wisconsin has grown from 65 to well over 2500 today. Why would these restaurants remain smoke free, were it not profitable?
This last statement IS misleading, and restaurants are biased in Wisconsin...as many municipalities, e.g. Madison, Middleton, Neenah, etc..., initially banned smoking in restaurants but not in bars, restaurants pushed for legislation banning smoking in bars to level the playing field. The number of smoke-free restaurants has grown due to local ordinances prohibiting smoking in restaurants.
