Mind you, however he hid it, I'm sure they use better tests now.
I'm not sure about the particulars, but it did involve
memorising which lights are supposed to be which colour when
they start blinking. You don't need to be able to see that
the top light on a traffic light is red as long as you can
see it is lit ...
Opticians, btw, use a standardised sett of pictures where
you are supposed to recognise numbers picked out in dots of
one colour set in a field of dots of the other colour (red
or green). If you memorise the numbers, you can rattle them
off and no-one is any the wiser ...
