By the time bio-fuel gets organised it'll have been made obsolete by
hydrogen fuel cells. It's got great 'green' credentials (to keep Paul
happy), it's the most abundant element. Engines running on it require
little servicing because of the lack of mechanical parts. There's a lot
going for it.
And one thing it has going for it is "BOOM" (1)
Alex
(1) Do google "Hindenburg".
(2) Then think what happens every time a silly female drives parks by
touch.
I saw somthing like this on Mtthbusters. Hydrogen is actually a much
safer fuel than gasoline. When hydrogen burns, it does not explode, it
burns quickly and tends to rise very rapidly itself being lighter than
air. This is why so many people actually survived the Hindenburg.
Gasoline spreads out and sticks to surfaces then burns for a relatively
long time thus maximizing destruction.
Except -- and this is also from mythbusters -- gasoline is *very* hard to
set on fire in the first place. You can stand there all day throwing
cigar butts into a lake of high-octane, and nothing will happen. What
burns is the petrol vapour. With a full tank, you can enter your Jag in
an endurance stock car race and it won't explode or turn into a fireball
even once.
Hydrogen, OTOH, requires one spark only.
But, gasoline is highly volatile and creates vapor very fast. Once that
vapor is ignited it will burn for a long time. Most of the heat in hydrogen
explosions goes straight upwards in a fireball. Gasoline is more powerful
than dynamite as shown on the show Secret Life of Machines where they made a
cannon and shot a metal ball off with dynamite then gasoline. The gasoline
charge was vastly stronger. That is a measure of its potential energy.
