Nope. Most of our folks take the option of an extra week/s pay, while
not taking the actual vacation. Ex: base pay is 52K year, at 5 years
service they can really collect 55 weeks pay. They may take 1, 2, or 3
weeks (depending on tenure) and get paid for that time while gone...or
they may work all 52 weeks and recieve 1, 2, or 3 extra week's
pay...thereby increasing FICA, FUTA, SUTA, Medicare, WCI, and our
contribution to their 401K. In the latter instance the additional cost
is obvious...in the former case we also incur additional expense
because we have to pay someone else to cover their shifts while gone
(which is often compounded by the fact that the "filler-in" person
often is paid some overtime).
To somehow book that twice to make it look like you're paying a lot more
in "labor expenses" seems not-fully-honest reporting. �Or am I missing
another nit?
Yup...you are missing the fact that folks are getting paid beyond
their base rate, for work/time not worked. Most of these "extras" are
tied to length of service, as is vesting in their 401K, but our
"attainment" is 3-4 times the industry averages (according to our
health insurance admin and pension paln admin)...both of which we
compensate as part of our labor cost (knew I'd forgotten some :)
Also, just curious: "continuing education" expense for pub/pool-hall
workers? �Other than the latest TABC updates, on what do they get
further-educated? �Or is this mostly for management?
Mostly management, or folks aspiring to advance to management. As
someone later states, the courses have to have some pertinence. We
automatically pay for any business/accounting courses, marketing
usually, and on a couple of occasions "people skills" education. And
seperate from college we pay for any HR seminars that come through
town. I've also sent a couple of asst mgrs through Dale Carnegie, and
paid for it.
