That's a little patronizing.

A little?!

Not everyone who discusses religion with you has simply spent an
evening or two "pondering these things" on the porch.

Appeal to authority works like this: if you haven't studied MY OFFICIAL
GUIDE (or heard my official guy speak or passed my official test or
whatever) then you can't possibly know what you're talking about,
therefore, you are wrong.

Another variation would be "what, you think that because you spent a
weekend thinking about this, you've suddenly arrived at some truth
heretofore unknown to [my chosen authorities] down through the ages...?!
Hogwash!"

Appeal to authority another logical fallacy.

It turns out that scotch, cigars and a porch do not invalidate a correct
answer that flies in the face of widely believed falsehoods. They don't
PROOVE the correct answer, but they certainly don't invalidate it.

I suppose you could spin this as another ad-hom, too. "You didn't study
in my approved way, so you can't know what you're talking about. I
won't bother addressing the points/issues you raise."

I will not, no matter how "good" the deal, patronise any business which sends
unsolicited commercial e-mail or that advertises in discussion newsgroups.
