When you are in a subsistence environment, you have no leverage. It happened in this country with sharecropping and company towns.
I have visited a lot of the countries where the corporations still use those techniques to control prices. The banana farms in Northern Panama are a good example, as are the pineapple plantations in Costa Rica.
