Too true. Old humidors used anything that would absorb water. I've seen
sponges, clay blocks, and small bricks. Any of them will work. However, the
addition of propylene glycol will cause the media to release it's moisture
in response to the drop in humidity and not all the time. The result is a
more even humidity. Eventually, they both need to be replenished with water.
