Bastards!   $194.00 total fees on $30.00 declared value!

I've lost my last two packages from two different sources. Now my
budget (ha!) is used up and I'm a little cautious about ordering from
anywhere for a while.

that's the risk you run for ordering from Canada.
i've been hit several times before, but most of the times the boxes
get thru. i'd say i've had a 80% success rate in the past 5 years or
so.
so when you order you do have to consider the risk factor.
and also, order from sources that will not label the boxes "tobacco"
or "smoking cigars".
i only order from suppliers that are willing to be vague on their
descriptions like: "colletable items", "hobby supplies", etc/
if it's any consolation, i once paid $500 in taxes on 2 boxes of
cigars from a certain place i ordered from. had to sell a few things
on ebay to finance the hit that i paid with my c.c.
