Degausers are pretty cheap... ;)
So are Degaussers.
:-P
Alex - prefers a magnet.
That's what a degausser (thank you) is. The difference is: with your
standard horseshoe or bar magnet, you don't get the AC you need to do a
good job on those tapes/platters.
If your magnet is big enough and you hit the tape/disc hard enough, you
don't need any AC. Or DC. Which saves the environment. Which makes the
caribou happy. At least until the US starts drilling for oil.
At one time my company had an NMR spectrometer. This is an instrument used
for tickling organic compounds with a sweep of radio frequencies and
detecting the subsequent nuclear magnetic vibrations. From the frequency
of the nuclear vibrations one can deduce chemical structure. I think we
had a 900mhz machine which corresponds to about 20 tesla magnetic field.
The detector was a large stainless steel tank about 4' in diameter and 6
feet long. Inside was a superconducting magnetic cooled with liquid
helium. To wipe any magnetic media we would place it under the tank during
an experimental run or two.
Before each run the operators would sweep the area for loose paper clips,
wrenches, and what-not.
