Wow, that's a pretty high bar, Alex!

"It doesn't count unless it hurts" seems to me a rather stingey
definition of generous...!

Tossing a buck or two at a beggar in the street isn't generous, but
sacrificing a weekend every month to work in a shelter or tithing your
income does qualify. YMMV, of course.

What if I'm comfortable ("in my comfort zone") working a weekend a month
in a shelter or tithing? Now I'm not generous?

For that matter, what if I have to leap WAY out of my comfort zone just
to acknowledge the beggar, let alone toss him a buck? THEN am I
generous?!

Is your definition of generous closer to "it doesn't count unless you
leave Alex's comfort zone"? That seems goofy, too.

How about: It's generous if it was unnecessary, kind and the recipient
feels helped by it -- what's that do for you?

Heh, that was my off the cuff stab; dictionary.com gives:

gen·er·ous      [jen-er-uhs] Pronunciation Key
adjective
1.liberal in giving or sharing; unselfish: a generous patron of the
arts; a generous gift.
[definitions that don't apply to this context snipped.]

So, to them, it qualifies if you do it "liberally" -- you know, like
Paul, as opposed to like me or Mickey (we're conservatives ;)

I suppose that means if you do it on a less-measured basis, sort of
freely and ad-hoc, no? By that definition, tithing would NOT be
"generous" (as it's more structured, nearly to the point of obligation.)
