Hype: Oliva Serie V premium cigars continue Oliva's fine tradition of
blending perfectly balanced, full-flavored cigars. Each Oliva Serie V Ligero
has a hearty blend of Nicaraguan Jalapa Valley Ligero longfiller and
Nicaraguan binder capped in one of the most gorgeous and flavorful
Nicaraguan Habano Sun Grown wrappers you've ever tasted. Blended to deliver
a full-bodied taste while maintaining a non-overpowering smoothness, the
smoke is complex with accents of rich coffee and dark chocolate on a long
finish.
Made plans to meet Will at one of Cleveland's landmark cigar shops, Cousins
between 1:45 and 2:15 and as usual I was a little early and he wasn't there
yet. I took this opportunity to look over their stock and pick a smoke for
the afternoon. John, the counterman, was very helpful and asked if I was
looking for anything in particular. I told him that I wasn't but was
meeting someone for a smoke and that his name is Will. John knew him and
said that he would let me know when Will arrived. I did settle on a new to
me cigar that has had a lot of hype lately, the Oliva V and just as I was
paying, Will walked in.
The Cigar had beautiful construction and a perfect draw. But burn problems
cropped up almost right away. The ash was flaky and the wrapper split half
way down, so I'm assuming that it was overly moist. Not usually a problem
with cigars from this particular B&M so maybe it hadn't had time to
stabilize. John told me that he has trouble getting these in and keeping
them on the shelves. Add to that, I was drinking a Dr Pepper and the
sweetness of the pop gave me a sour taste from the cigar. Did not
compliment it at all. The taste was earthy with a leather overtone that
collapsed into that sour taste right away.
Had a great two-plus hour conversation with Will on everything from politics
to religion and back again. Meeting him was great. He even gifted me a few
of the now infamous CFO #7's. I'll review those as soon as I get a chance
to smoke one.
This is a powerful smoke, felt the nic kick as I was about to light another
cigar and thought better of it. No sweats but I can tell that my wintertime
consumption has killed my tolerance. I've been down to just a couple cigars
since Christmas. Probably should have went with something milder but wanted
to see what all the fuss was about.
All in all, Oliva V = no, Will = yes.
