The good news is: there are objective criteria for measuring the
necessity of a particular procedure.
The criteria in this case was profitability vs lifespan. Not a good
criteria, and likely would have been overturned by the review board.
Shame is the girl did not have that kind of time...
I do not believe that this girl got special criteria applied to her that
were any different than the criteria you or I would've had applied to us.
Hence, the criteria have been open to review for years. It's a shame
you didn't see fit to raise this issue years ago, in time to save this
one poor girl.
Not really. The standards are set by a medical review board, and the
insurance company has to comply. But not immediately. They can deny ANY
claim they want, or pay only a portion, and you have the right to appeal
their decision. The bet is that you won't live long enough to
successfully appeal some of the more expensive claims...
Actually, this is an interesting point: are you telling me that the
hospital refused to perform a life-saving transplant on the basis of the
patient's inability to pay?
If we're going to be irate and sue somebody, THERE is where the blame
lies! Forget about the insurance company -- who CARES about the
insurance company! -- if you're going to argue that this woman died
because she was unable to pay for her transplant, then it's HER DOCTORS
(and the hospital for which they work) that acted immorally and
illegally.

Lots of good cigar info, the ASC Birthday page, FAQs, vendors and more at

A "great" review is one with the name of the cigar before the review text
in the body of the post. :)
