He's right. They triage you and either make you wait literally 8 hours
more or they turn you away.
They can't and don't turn anyone away. Once you're in their waiting
room, they are "treating" you and your lawyer. However, I can't speak
for waiting times. In my hospital average waiting time for a
non-emergency is about 30 minutes. These are tracked for every ED.
Cardiacs are treated within 2 minutes of hitting the ED if not sooner.
They have ways to get rid of you. I am a veteran of the Kaiser ER when my
senior citizen friend was suffering from CHF. We cooled our heels there for
4 hours often before being seen. Want to know the advice given to me by
somebody who'd been through a similar situation as me? "Never go into an ER
without a lawyer on your cell phone speed dial." One thing is becoming
clear and that is the west coast has some improvements to make.
Clearly your hospital has ample funds and is not bursting at the seems with
indigents and other people who have no means to pay.
