This is just more of that liberal arrogance. "People are too stupid to
determine who is telling the truth and who is spinning it. We must
protect the stupid people, i.e., every one else."
Your first sentence is debatable.
Arrogance is a matter of perspective, and it is msot definitely not a
liberal prerogative. Neo-Con arrogance is at least as breath-takingly
arrogant ....
Your second sentence is spot on. People *are* that stupid. The success
of
commercial advertising and campaign promises is proof of that.
Your third sentence is wrong. The only way to "protect" people is to
educate them in techniques for analysis and evaluation of information.
But that's not how they want to do it. The liberal or progressive
approach is to pass laws. Onerous intrusive nanny laws.
Generally speaking, conservatives pass just as many laws -- it's only their
focus which is different.
Nor am I entirely convinced that a laissez-faire attitude is always right.
Hypothetical case: ownership rules of media outlets are revoked. Saudi
billionaires buy up News Corp, ABC, NBC, CNN and Clear Channel and enforce
editorial guidelines more in line with Wahhabist morals. Would that make
you happy? It should.
