A new cigar from Hoyo has come out called Hoyo de Tradicion. Banking
on some of the classic Hoyo flavors (the Cuban product was known for
being sweet, fragrant, and smooth using various complex blends.
The line originates with Jose Gener who opened a Cuban factory in the
1850s and started the cigar line with a brand called "La Esception."
Using money from this successful cigar he bought a farm named Hoya de
Monterrey in the vuelta abajo. By 1865 the Hoyo brand had become
established as one of the finest Cuban cigar lines, especially with
the British who were drawn to the sweetly smooth quality of the
blends. Gener moved to Spain and died there in 1890.
This new cigar tries to bring back the "tradition" of the Hoyo
sweet/aromatic cigar. Traditionally, the Hoyo was a cigar of unique
blending, which this cigar does as well (check out the tobaccos used.)
For my taste the non-Cuban Hoyo line is a bit mild for me so I've
stayed away from the general Hoyo and Punch lines, which to me are
identical.
This new cigar is medium bodied, full flavored, amazingly packed with
numerous tobaccos with a rosado wrapper (a favorite of mine.) I've
smoked about 6 of them and would highly recommend this cigar as a
morning smoke, or late after dinner, i.e., 8 p.m. with some fine
liquor.
Cigar: Hoyo de Monterrey, Hoya de Tradicion
Country of Origin: Honduras
Wrapper: Viso Rosado leaf from Honduras Jamastran
Valley
Binder: Habano Connecticut
Filler: "sweet" Nicaraguan, Honduran, and Dominican
General Construction: Box pressed (not severe) but packed with
tobacco. The cigar size I bought was the Toro Grande.
Draw: Appropriate given the amount of tobacco, yet
not effortless.
Price: About $5
Smoke: First third of this cigar is mild to medium in
body, with little length to the flavor. Flavors abound however. The
second and third parts to the cigar bring out more flavor, medium
body, more smoke produced but still not very strong in length of
flavor. The flavors remained balanced and uniform throughout the
cigar. The cigar ends with excellent flavor, body, and construction.
General thoughts: An excellent medium body cigar, well priced at
about $5 with ample flavor and body for my tastes (which run to the
strong cigar lines.) I don't think this is the cigar to be left with
on a deserted island but as a adjunct to the usual cigar repertoire I
would highly recommend it. The interesting part of this cigar, which
is why the cigar is so flavorful, is the incredible tobaccos brought
together, in good quantity, in this cigar. It is obviously heavily
packed. I bought another box.
