In a stunning blow to America's feminine hygiene, consumer products
manufacturer Procter & Gamble initiates the largest tampon recall in
history, pulling Rely Tampons from store shelves. The action results
from the ongoing Toxic Shock Syndrome controversy.
When I was an undergrad, MIT had a lecture series which brought in
a wide variety of interesting people. (Pat Paulson being my
favorite.) One of the most interesting talks was by the guy who
was head of the Rely project. He described his job for over 10
years: Planning, designing, health testing, market testing,
organizing the manufacture and distributing the Rely Tampon. First,
it's eye-opening to see all facets of getting a product from
the drawing board to the shelf. Second, he worked for the company
(and still did) for over 10 years on a "failed" project.
