Padre can correct me on this, but the last time the Danes had to defend
themselves against tyranny was in 1940, and a few handguns and rifles
wouldn't have made much impression on Nazi stormtroopers.
Correct. A small handful of Danish soldiers tried to resist. They were
flattened in about 45 minutes when their machinegun malfunctioned. Poor
sods, to my mind they died in vain.
AAMOF, the German occupation is a good example of what you really need
against tyranny: a social conscience and communal courage was what the
Danes employed to save all their Jews from the Nazis.
And friendly cooperation from the German troops who often turned a blind
eye. The reason it was possibly to save approx 95 % of the 8000 Jews in DK
was that the German administration quite deliberately leaked the plans for
rounding up the Jews. Apparently they had received an order to rid Denmark
of Jews, and the commanding officcer apparently thought that the less Jews
there were in Denmark, the easier his job would be. I guess there's more
than one way to skin a cat.
AAMOF? ;-)
