Tricky.
In certain cases, religious and cultural identity may not only
overlap but be essentially interchangeable. Is Marc Jewish because he
is a believer or because he was born into the tribe? Does an Amish
person identify himself by his faith or by his language and dress
code?

It can be tricky, but in some cases the answer is pretty clear.
Hitler didn't "forgive" Jews if they converted to Catholicism,
so that was pretty clearly ethnic. It was _racial_ purity, not
idealistic purity.

It's much harder with Turks and Kurds.
