Perhaps the infidel, by his very nature, is not-innocent...?

Perhaps the misinterpretation isn't that "kill the infidel" is wrong
but, rather, in the too-broad interpretation of "infidel" -- maybe it
was one of those word-slip things, and God meant the muslim equivalent
of "kill Satan."
