Many PCs (incl Macs) ship with different keyboards for
Europe (incl UK
;). If you set your language system to a foreign
language via your
control panel (System Prefs on Mac), you get some
different keys. On
Windows, there are Alt-key combinations you can use to
type any valid
unicode character. On Mac, option-<whatever> will give
you all sorts of
interesting glyphs, such as ¡?£¢f§¶?ªº. That was
option-1 through 9 +
0, the QWERTY row, with option (US keyboard/language),
is:
¦.´®Ý¥¨-ø¼³O«, etc. Then there's option-shift-<key>,
etc., which
further modifies the US keyboard/language output.
I'm familiar with the concept of the "country" settings
for Microsoft products, but I've never had reason to use
it. You description still seems to indicate that in some
cases you have to hit some combination of keys to get the
right thing to come out. Without a special keyboard to do
it for you, it seems complicated. I don't know how those
Chinese folks manage to do it at all.
They're clever, those Chinee ...

I have a UK keyboard and regularly (several times a day)
switch to French and German language settings. Once set,
it's really a matter of remembering the different key
placement -- easier done than it sounds. After a while, you
simply know that in the German setting, hitting the "@" key
will give you an "ä", and in the French setting, hitting the
"9" will produce a "ç". Multiple keystrokes (ALT + 1234)
are only really required for very unusual symbols indeed,
and you would have to resort to the ALT codes whichever
language you were typing in.
