I picked up a new Zippo about a year ago to use as my back-up cigar
lighter. When I fill the thing with fuel it seems to dry up in a week
or so (right from new). In otherwords fill it up, sit it on a shelf,
try and light it a week later and she is dry. Does not seem to matter
how much fuel I put in it. Is this normal for a Zippo? If not I may
send it in for warranty.

You can get a drop in butane insert for your zippo. It just drops right
into your favorite zippo case and uses butane instead of zippo fluid. I
have one and it works great and doesn't leak. Probably will do a better
job of lighting cigars as well.

While on the subject, I heard once that you can use 100% isopropyl
alcohol (not the 70% mixure you usually see) in place of zippo fluid
and, though it will evaporate more quickly, it will give you a better
light without the zippo fluid aftertaste. Also that it produces a clear
flame rather than the orange yellow we're used to, because it burns
hotter. Anyone tried this?

No. You can use the new formula zippo fluid, and will not have the taste
or smell, and still produce a visible flame.

Besides, if you are trying to combat it evaporating too quickly, pure
alcohol is the worst of ideas. It will evaporate much faster.

Hmm, I didn't know the new formula is odorless/tasteless. Is it in a new
bottle or just the same ole yellow zippo bottle? Did they change it up
just for cigar/pipe smokers?

Zippo fluid has never been in a yellow bottle. That is ronsonol, and it is
utter crap.

Zippo fluid comes in a Black/White/Red tin bottle that says Zippo across the
front. The new formula has a callout on the upper left corener that
says "New Improved Formula"...
