When your kids go astray, you correct them.

Unfortunately many parents when faced with their children's poor
performance blame: 1) the school; 2) society; 3) their own unfortunate
predicaments...etc....before they look at the real problem of their
own lack of placing limits on their kids. And, it would help if they
actually read a book to them while they were growing up instead of
having the kid play computer games, or "better yet" watch their
parents while the parents sit mesmerized in front of some "reality" TV
show.

I've seen it myself many times over with patients and even some
friends. And, when they go to a school meeting, all they do is bitch
about something beyond the school's capability to correct.

We need better parenting and a change in the attitude of many parents
that they do not need to work with their kids at home after school.
The school is not the end all in rearing and education. Unfortunately
this same perverted attitude exists relative to society in general.
Society must (it's a right! goddamit!) provide, provide, provide.
Even for past atrocities (hey, I want money from the Egyptians since
my ancestors were slaves.)

What's screwy about this is that not so long ago, society did provide.
Rearing children in an agricultural society is to a large extent a communal
effort. And much of the rest of the work was done by the extended family:
aunts had semi-maternal functions, grandparents and other elderly relatives
could be relied upon to watch kids and pass on values and manners.

All that is largely gone, and the upshot of several generations of urbanised
nuclear family is that they can't help themselves but moan, whinge and
demand. Sure, it's convenient to demand the hard work from everybody else,
but to a fair degree it is simply frustration and ignorance. All too many
parents simply do not know what to do with their kids. They never had the
upbringing, and they now lack the support network to substitute for their
own ignorance.
