That reminds me of this: A long time ago, my brother was a
delivery driver for Domino's Pizza. There was a large
gathering at our house, and we decided to order about 20
pizza's to feed everyone. And since my brother worked for
Domino's, he got a 15% discount which we chose to take
advantage of. We got the pies and the bill. We divided
the bill by the number of people and collected their shares.

My brother refused to pay his share, because "my employee
discount is my contribution". (Brother is also a notorious
tightwad.) This caused a certain amount of not-to-heated
arguing. He was getting free food in some people's eyes.
OTOH, he argued that 1. without him, we'd all have to pay
more and 2. he "earned" that discount by his work at
Domino's, so he wasn't eating for free.

I never reached a personal conclusion about who was right
and why in this debate. I'd be interested in the group's
opinions.

Mathematically, I think it would depend on the number of people involved.

Let's say the pizzas would have come to $100 and there were 20 people.

Each share of the 20 people would be $5.00 each.

With the 15% discount the bill would be $85.

$85 divided by nineteen people would be a little less than $4.50 each.

So each guy save 50 cents over what they would have payed without your
brother's discount.

However if there were only five people, they would have paid $20 each list
price but the four would have paid $21.25 each for the discounted amount.

If I were your brother I'd have shared the discount with the others and paid
my share..then I'd really be receiving the discount my employer intended me
to receive. The other way I'm sort of "selling discounts" which I don't
think is within the spirit of the policy.
