To My Overweight Brethren On ASC

And you people know who you are.

A friend of over 15 years, at the age of 62, and 100 pounds overweight,
dropped dead in his tracks while out hunting the other day. His
hunting companions said they knew something was wrong when he stopped
suddenly to unload ammo from his rifle. As soon as he finished, he
keeled over and died. It was a massive coronary.

The man ate too much, never exercised, had a cholesterol level that was
through the roof, and he thought being fat was just the way some people
were destined to be and he never felt he was at risk. Despite family
and friends pleading with him for years to do something, he did
nothing, and now he is gone.

As I have written before, I was once a very overweight man. My
cholesterol level was off the charts, and I knew I had to take action.
I have people that count on me to be alive. So I lost every single
pound I set out to lose and I've felt great ever since.

Yeah, sure, I could drop dead in my tracks while running my daily 10
kilometers through the neighborhood. And these damned cigars probably
don't help much, either. But my thin self is always fighting my old
fat self in a battle to not return to the way my life used to be.

I don't mean to be an insulting prick, although history shows I'm quite
good at that, but I know many of you are overweight. Many overweight
ASCers have died over the years and are no longer around to entertain
us. There is nothing adorable or healthy in being overweight. It can
kill you. Don't go Karen Carpenter on me, but at least find a middle
ground between excess and taking care of yourself if you cannot fully
commit to the task of losing every pound you need to.

One note of caution: I lost my weight too fast and without the advice
or supervision of a doctor. At my age that was dumb and I got sick
near the end of the weight loss plan. I was anemic and experienced
other health problems that took me three months to recover from. I
eventually recovered from my too-rapid weight loss and I have blood
tests performed twice a year to make sure the heart is working as it
should and that my cholesterol level is satisfactory. At the advice of
my doctor I did cut way back on cigar puffing, but I still puff one
often enough to make me happy. Anyway, see a physician and please
don't end up like my friend. Dead is not a good way to be when people
need you.

Don't smoke one for my friend, by the way. Run a mile for him and
donate to the American Heart Association.
