Review: Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Churchill

Cigar: Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Churchill
Wrapper/Binder/Filler: puro Nicaraguan

After the embargo two regions were touted as having the "best" cigars
(i.e., closest to the Havana product) in the world: Canary Islands
and Nicaragua. The Canary Island product evolved into a lack luster
and tasteless product. Nicaragua remained fuller in flavor but lacked
intensity and strength. Interestingly, Honduran tobacco remained
strong but somewhat unidimentional. There are many Honduran and
Nicaraguan puros out there that just miss the mark either in the full
flavor or strength department.

Joya has come out with the Antano 1970 Churchill, supposedly going
back to 70s when Nicaraguan cigars rivaled the now forbidden fruited
Cuban product. A Nicaraguan puro, this cigar probably comes closest
to what the 70s product was like.

The cigar was not a typical Churchill (7X47) but had a ring gauge of
48.?.

The wrapper was typical Colorado maduro, Cuban Corojo seed. Initial
flavors reminded me immediately of the Camacho Corojo Churchill but
with some very minute added tobacco/cafe-au-lait flavors suggesting a
Honduran-something blend in the filler. The smoke continued along the
Honduran line in flavor. The cigar was being smoked blind on Rob's
"Blowin' Smoke" podcast along with two other smokers.

The cigar remained quite consistent through the smoke with medium to
full body in flavor with medium nicotine. I was still convinced it
was the Camacho Corojo Churchill with a twist, one of Christian's new
children of which I've lost tract. But the fuller flavor was
surprising for a Honduran and it made sense when the cigar was
revealed as Nicaraguan.

In summary, this cigar was not a typical Nicaraguan puro with that
medium body, lemon-citrus overtone but had more earthy body as with
the Honduran or Cuban tobacco. Length of flavor was relatively long
and nicotine strength was medium. An excellent fuller bodied with
less unidimentionality of the typical Honduran puro. I'm going for a
box or two to start.
