Google's not the most intuitive for those used to newsreaders. Here's some
info found on another ng on quoting with Google:

The key to quoting with the current interface is to NOT use the
"Reply" link at the bottom of the article.

First, click "Show options" at the top of the article next to
the poster's name. Then click "Reply" at the bottom of the header box that
shows up on the next screen. The reply window will include attribution
to the message author, and full quoted text of the message.
