Because of the open flame looks scary. It has nothing at all to do with
really keeping us safe (see Lee's comments about ball point pens or get
someone to show you how to slit someone's throat with a credit card), it's
all about the appearance of "safety" so the stupid cows "...go about your
business!" It's all smoke and mirrors.
The only way to make flying truly safe is to anesthetize the passengers for
the duration of the flight.
And in the mean time you get to keep paying more and more for the privilege
of being treated like *** by some pompous self-important flying waitress
with delusions of being Law Enforcement.
Feh! I'll drive or stay home.
