Thanks all for the sympathy.
What I did was get Alan to massage it with some nice massage bar from
Lush. That, combined with both ibuprofen and paracetamol and a good
night's sleep, had dealt with 80% of it. I'm left with a little
stiffness and tollerable pain in the lower back, and stiff shoulders.
I'm hoping the swim will ease the shoulders: that's just from the
inescapable way one tenses up to ease pain elsewhere, and exercise
should shift it.
I think the amount of pain I felt was probably out of proportion for the
minor injury it is because I am a chronic pain sufferer and the pain
receptors switch into panic mode as soon as anything untoward happens.
It feels like what I did was strain the ligaments slightly at the
attachment points at the base of the spine, rather than strain the
muscle itself: too low for there to be much muscle whete it hurts, but
right where all the big muscels from the back and bum attach to the
pelvig girdle at the back. Pah! Beverly, you are right - backs have
not evolved enough!
I'm just annoyed that so little a movement could result in such pain for
a day, when my back is usually strong and relatively unaffected by the
fibro. Possibly an inducicious stretch at a funny angle after the
lifting of boxes of fabric in the loft the day before... I shall take
things cautiously for a day or two: no climbing the loft ladder or
heaving 50lb boxes of fabric! I have plenty to do without that, anyway..
I'd better go and get dressed and pack the swimming back. It's dull
today: maybe the outdoor pool will be empty except for us tough oldies! ;)

i'm glad you're feeling a bit better! as a chronic back pain sufferer
(i fractured two vertebra as a teenager), my rememdy is heat, massage,
and three over the counter motrin before i go to bed....and i try to
keep up on back excercises. it all helps!
Enjoy the swim....here in New Jersey, it seems like years since we
last saw the sun for any extended time.....
