I am in the process of making a shirt, with fabric that is a triffle
thicker than "normal" shirting (I got the material for $1.50/yd, for
practice, though I do like the color). I just finished attaching the
yoke to the fronts and back and noticed the seams (four layers deep)
thicker than I expected. (I topstitched, and it came out great so
far :) )
I am about to hang the sleeves on, and I expect to topstitch the seams
as well. Here's the question: The fabric ravels, not terribly but
still ravels. Doubling over the shoulder/sleeve seam (to enclose the
cut edge) would leave a seam five layers thick. ??If I serge the
seam cut edges before I topstitch and leave the fabric not doubled
over, will the threads of the serging print through? If I don't
double the seam or serge, the edge will fall apart on me over time.
TIA
and adding to my previous answer, I have done a flat felled sleeve seam that worked out just fine so I don't think the thickness would be a problem and it would enclose the raw edge of the seam. Although serging is quicker.
