But my Sewing life CHANGED when many years ago , I went To an
International BOOK FAIR in Jerushalayim and found
Sewing Without a Pattern , by Phyllis Ficarotta, Little Craft Book
series, Sterling , 1972....
And i strated REALLY making my OWN patterns as i LIKED them , it isn`t
that i haven`t learned Classical pattern making ,, but i wasn`t happy
with it .....the above book suited me and my life style much
better ..

I've thought about this for a couple of days and I've come to the conclusion
that there have been two major influences on my sewing of the last few
years.  One is a book and the other is an idea.

The book is called "Easy Style Sewing the New Classics" by Elesebeth
Gynther1987 Sterling Publishing Co. Inc.  The author appears to be Danish
and many of the pics in the book include Danish flags but the book is
published in NY so it may have been a later publication of a book originally
published in Denmark.

This is the best book I have ever seen for giving a range of different
options that can be done from the one basic pattern drafted to suit oneself
and it's a real sparker for ideas.  For example: 2 Basic Tops and each has 2
different sleeves Kimono/Raglan and dropped sleeves/set in sleeves.  Add to
that the various sleeves and how they can be flared, narrowed, puffed in
various places and the different style cuffs and then there are all the
collar variations, shawl, Peter Pan, Madarin, draped etc, etc, etc, etc.
None of the clothes are close fitting or have seaming that needs much
fitting (such as princess seams), but then that isn't my personal style so
that doesn't bother me.  It suits my country, casual lifestyle and need for
comfortable clothes that can take me from the garden or going to the tip, to
going shopping or out to lunch.

The other influence that is an idea, is SWAP.  But not the SWAP of the
internet as that has drifted far away from the original idea.  It is the
SWAP from the orignal source of the Internet based SWAP and that is the
article in 'Australian Stitches' by Lynne Cook.  Choose a number of basic
and simple patterns for tops and bottoms and ensure that these patterns can
be sewn quickly without a lot of fitting.  Pick a range of co-ordinating
fabric so all tops can go with all bottoms and then start sewing.   This
idea is so obvious that it still astounds me that it took me so long to twig
to it.  I love tailoring jackets but they spend so little time on my back
that they really aren't worth the time given my lifestyle.  I need easy
care, easy wear clothes that survive multiple washings.

So, now I have a name to how I dress. I never make or buy anything that
can't be used with 3 or 4 other items in my wardrobe.I don't need a lot
of different things that way. I also make sure that accessories are
bought or made the same way.

with several of my skirt/shirt ensmbales ,, Busses trains and public
places here FREEZE us thus i need a nice top to keep me breathing ,
and my shoulders mooving....
Which reminds me , to tell you that 2.5 years ago i made a [curtain
cloth] skirt /shirt, saw a varigated cotton thread with same
collors ,, knitted a lace ruffle which i sewed omto the skirt`s hem
which i sewed shorter than usual] + knitted a matching Pocket ,,, the
lace is remmovable ,,, if needed.... it really Makes it look nice .

Spent yesterday afternoon sewing pique covers , since the original
material is 2 metters wide i used that as length ,,, i went to the
shop to buy enough material for 4 , but the man gave me the end of the
bolt ....... thus i made 5 ,, for almost nothing ....
Than repaired 2 cloth bags [where the handles, sort of dwindled
away ], i like my handles SOFT ,,, thus i was very lucky to find a
knitted Cord of sorts, that matched the one, and an old cloth belt,
of a long forgotted dress, that matched the 2nd.
knitted my cotton shirt, and worked on my New Fiberart work that
needs , more details on the woven part ,,
