When ever I used thread lubricant I ran a single thin line of it down the spool of thread. I found that when I went to spools that were wound like Coats it was a help, when I switched to Gutterman and Metler I no longer needed it.I think it really was a matter of a better quality thread. I also found that Metler's silk finish thread works the best for me.
