My thought was that it would work well the few times I want to trace
large pattern pieces - princess seamed dress pattern pieces come to
mind, or pants pattern pieces. Instead of taping everything to a
sliding glass door, if I had a glass topped table, I could put a light
under it and make a "light box." I wouldn't have to have another
piece of equipment to move around, could use the table for other
things; I would have a multi-tasking piece of furniture!

My desk/sewing table at home is similar to this, but just a single desk:

I just move the sewing machine out of the way and stick a light underneath when I need a lightbox. It works a treat. So I think your idea would be even better as my "window" is realatively small and a glass topped table would give a much bigger tracing area.

Glass top dining tables used to be common, and are perfect for a "light table." They used to turn up at garage sales. I haven't gone garage saling for a while, so I don't know if they still do or not. I used to have a little plastic parson's table with a clear insert in the top, too.
