I don't think I would be invited to that wedding- not only does it
seem to me to be an insult for another woman other than the bride to
wear any sort of "bridal" gown (or even white) to a wedding, but the
gown is tattered, and decayed-looking. It just seems so insulting to
me. I would be absolutely horrified if someone showed up to my wedding
dressed like that. I enjoy Dickens very much (although I find him
rather tedious & depressing sometimes- the bulk of his books concern a
rehashing of his own tragic childhood.) However I don't find the Miss
Haversham passage amusing whatsoever. It is tragic, and sad, that this
woman lost her mind in this way, and remained a prisoner of her own
madness. I am at a loss to understand how a person could find it
*amusing*, never in my wildest ideas would I have thought it amusing-
I can only conjecture that it requires a high degree of callousness to
think so. I have no other explanation.
