That's almost totally wrong. :) Any loyal subject (i.e. a citizen of the United Kingdom or a dependant state (Canada, for example, but not the USA... ) may wear Royal Stewart, the rest are all restricted to those entitled to wear them by clan association. That means a blood descendant in the male line. Thus I may wear the Douglas tartan from my father's side, but may not wear the Robertson of my maternal grandmother's family.

Out of curiosity, what happens when someone wears a pattern they are not entitled to wear by birthright? There must be some penalty to avoid identity theft or just plain orneriness.

Look, if you find one you really like, wear it! You'd probably get laughed at in Scotland, but only if you made it up into whatever badly... We'd still sell you it and pocket the cash. Canny nation, the Scots...
