OT: Paint old metal hardware with latex paint?

Since every off topic question I have ever asked has been expertly answered
I need to know now, (and can't find the answer on google) if very old metal
drawer handles can be painted with latex paint (primed first of course).
I ask because I am painting my kitchen cabinets. I took off the knobs on
the cupboards and am not putting them back because there are little finger
holds for opening. The drawers do not have them though. I hate the old
hardware, its so ugly. but also I have gone over budget with supplies and
if I don't have to buy new hardware for the drawers I am not going to. I
really want the whole kitchen to look seamless, so I thought if I repaint
the old handles the same color it would disguise them.
What does everyone think?
TIA!
