A better book for really delving into the whole "cotton-ness" of cotton fabric is "All About Cotton", in the Fabric Reference Series by Julie Parker. Where both Claire's and Sandra's books--like many textiles books--give an overview of fabrics in general, with some specific sewing and use info, Julie's books on cotton, silk, and wool give very specific information about many different kinds of fabrics in each of those fibers. Be sure to get the ones that have swatches! Each book includes 30-40 swatches of the various kinds of fabrics and weaves Julie examines. The idea is to tape or glue (I like to use double stick tape) each swatch onto the set of two pages that deal with it. That is a learning experience, as well.
If you'd like to find these books, go to http://www.raincitypublishing.com/ Tell Julie Karen sent you!

There are gazillions of kinds of cottons.
Yes, and I find that both Claire Schaeffer's and Sandra Betzina's
books on fabric are very disappointing in this area. Sandra covers
many silks, but you have to know the names of cotton weaves to find
them in her index. There is nothing alphabetically listed for cotton.
