Just brought out all my summer shorts and found that the RTW ones made
like this (with the elastic stitched to the fabric/self casing) are a
pain to take apart to replace the old (cheap, stretched-out) elastic.
So I finished ripping, then...
serged the raw waistband edge
turned it over in a casing, top stitched (2" opening for elastic)
inserted elastic (easy to adjust)
sewed up the elastic band and then the opening
stitch in the ditch of the side, CF, and CB seams to prevent any
rolling or shifting
I like to put a pencil mark on one side of each end of the elastic, to
help prevent the Mobius strip effect.
My preferred elastic is 1" or 1-1/4" wide and sold on reels off the
notions wall. I usually buy ten yards at a time. This stuff stays in
place, and I can haul around my phone, wallet, and camera in my shorts
pockets without compromises. N.B. these are jam shorts for outdoors
and the public.
