Olwyn mary,
I saw your extensive list of what you ordered and it sounds really
exciting. I'm taking a draping class right now and its all about
cutting fabric up in various angles, circles squrares (think Vionnet)
and approaching fashion design from a three-deminsion point of view by
draping the fabric onto the form instead of pattern drafting first. Its
quite exciting but we consume so much fabric through only three hours
that I really need many plain and various texture/types like woven and
synthentic ones that drape well. I didn't se the link for the site
where you ordered it online. Could you share it with the rest of us??
I'd love to check it out and hope that my experience turns out as good
as your does! I too am skeptical of ordering fabric online when the
hand of the fabric is the most important thing!

My fabric arrived!!! Thank you, thankyouthankyouthankyou Beverley for
telling me about fashion fabrics club when I asked for rayon challis.
The mailman brought the box at lunchtime, and stopped housework for the
rest of the day (and here was me going to have the house completely all
done and dusted, laundry finished etc. before dh goes to the hospital
tomorrow. Oh well.) I was afraid it might arrive tomorrow, when I will
not be here to receive it.
In addition to the three lengths of rayon - which were indeed just as
pictured on their website, and they are good, generous cuts - I decided
to try their "10lb box of fabric for $29.99, one to four yard cuts".
Here's what was in there:
1 7/8 yd x 48" of silk crepe in a pale greeny cream, with fine
grey-green print; just the thing to line the grey tropic wt. wool I am
preparing for this fall.
1 1/2 yards x 58" of a heavier madonna blue crepe, skirt or pants
weight, ? rayon/poly blend?
1 1/2 yards x 72" of luscious camel color boiled wool - maybe a skirt
and vest for those chillier days? Come to think of it, the silk crepe
would also look good to line this.
1 1/8 yds x 60" pin striped (black on dusty rose) poly shirting. Kinda
yuk. The only thing I'm not thrilled with. Will do for muslins.
1 2/3 yds x 60" pale yellow shirred very fine and open weave cotton
knit. A long summer skirt, maybe?
3 1/2 yds x 44" floral stripe cotton shirting, mainly blues and pinks.
3 1/2 yds x 44" tapestry print type cotton in dark golds and browns,
with wheat sheaves faintly discernible - nice fall and winter blouse.
1 1/2 yds x 44" burnt orange georgette. ? rayon??
2 1/2 yards x 55" LOUD print of bright colors on black ground of very
heavy cotton - almost a drapery weight. Maybe summer pants or skirt to
be worn with a solid top??
2 yds x 58" of another very heavy cotton, basketweave this time, with
thin white flower outlines on a really HOT pink ground. (I like drapery
weight cottons for summer skirts - you don't have to either line them OR
wear a slip).
This stuff all appears to be bolt ends, with no identifying marks except
that some pieces have sticky labels with a letter and three numbers on,
probably the catalog item no. As you can imagine, the cigarette lighter
and very large ashtray which live in the studio for that purpose got a
good workout when I was doing burn tests to identify all these. You do
have to know your fabrics to order one of these boxes, but I am very
pleased with mine.
As this is my first foray into online fabric purchases (until now I have
always been able to find everything I needed locally) I was a little
nervous, but I shall not hesitate to order from them again.
