Hello,

I may be out of line here - first post - (blush), but has anyone posted
the Home Economics Archive kept by the Cornell University?

the url is
http://hearth.library.cornell.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=hearth;cc=hearth;sid=ad7b48753d651601d25ce6d903e0637f;rgn=full%20text;tpl=home.tpl

On this site are various how to sewing and drafting books, along with a
ton of other addictive stuff dating from the 1850's to 1925.

I have found heaps of interesting stuff and you can print a page or two
if you need to keep it for reference.

I really enjoy reading the posts. The washing machine thread was very
helpful as my toploader is on its last legs.

Anisah, thank you for posting this link. I was unaware that Cornell
U. kept an archive on sewing. I know C.U. does fabulous research
on every aspect of food and nutrition, and I have some of their great
publications on bread-making.
As the not-so-happy owner of a Maytag front-loader which has had a
myriad of problems, I advise you to do a LOT of research before you
buy. Top loaders are costly to have repaired; figure $350.00 (parts and
labor) to got the busy Maytag repairman out to your home, usually to
replace a mother board. Definitely go to the companies' onlinesite and
research the make/model. The Maytag Neptune, for example, has had
enough consumer complaints that the company recently offered a
class-action settlement for owners. I found many of the same problems
my machine had listed at Maytag's site.
The whole idea of a front-loader is appealing, but if it costs a ton
of money for frequent repairs, then any water-savings has been greatly
offset. I believe European machines such as Meile might have far fewer
problems, but do not know the availability of repairs and parts.
Toploaders, OTOH, are realtively simple mechanisms, inexpensive to
repair.
