G'day Cheryl
While I bought my first overlocker (serger) about 20 years ago and was more than happy with it's performance in that time, about 18 months ago I decided it was time to upgrade......can't rush these things you know!!
Anyway, as I'm a huge fan of Janome machines I browsed their website and decided I liked the sound of a Compulock and called to my local dealer for a demo. Shock, horror.....they don't carry them in stock because they are a TOL overlocker and not too many people want to spend this much on such a machine (their opinion). So I starting scanning eBay and Trading Post (newspaper) and found one listed in the latter, phoned the seller and we settled on a price.....because I had never even seen a Compulock in the flesh or test-driven one, I decided if it wasn't what suited then I would re-sell it on eBay. Well, it's still part of my sewing machine collection and the more I use it the more I love it, my only regret being that I didn't buy it much sooner.
Because it does Coverstitch and I've been using this feature quite a lot, last month I bought a Janome CoverPro on eBay. Both the Compulock and CoverPro were bought by ladies who never used the machines once they were taken out of the box, so I got new machines for much, much less than I would have through a dealer. The saving on the Compulock meant I could buy the CoverPro and still have $$$$'s to spare.
My sewing consists of not only my own clothing, but also 2 x DGD's and other home dec stuff.....in fact, anything that can be sewn is on my list, one favourite is lingerie and swimwear and the Compulock handles both of these with ease due to differential feed.
What I wanted in an overlocker...diff feed, twin needle, 2,3,4,5 thread options, varying width seam finishes, but the thing I like most on the Compulock is AUTO tension, it's fantastic and NO, I don't work for Janome, nor am I on commission.....I just love my current group of sewing machines which make sewing a breeze and very enjoyable.
Current lineup:
Janome 10001 Embroidery/sewing machine
Janome 9500 Embroidery/sewing machine....also bought through Trading Post 'and' UNused
Janome Compulock
Janome Coverpro 1000CP
Janome 3018...which has been promised to my 2 x DGD's.
Hope this helps? I'm sure you will get lots of info from owners of other makes too....we all seem to be happy with the machines we own, but for me it's been Janome for the last 25 yrs.
Bronwyn ;-)

I am planning to buy a serger (my first). I have done lots of sewing.
and would consider myself a very good seamstress, but not expert by any
means. I don't know what's important to get in a serger, or what you
can live without. I would be interested in hearing from people who
have sergers and what they consider important, what are good brands and
models, and what to stay away from. I plan to buy something in a
mid-price range, not a cheap one, but something that has some nice
features and is realiable. I will be using it to make clothing...right
now I'm working with a lot of stretchy stuff, like lycra. Please share
your thoughts and experiences.
