Overlocker problem solved!

Thanks everyone for your help. I've finally done it.

My husband cleaned and oiled the machine
I sacrificed one needle and half a yard of material
Left it alone for a day and a half
And threaded it with some of my nicer thread.

I've just tried it out three times and it looks like all is well. Phew!
