Re: Bosch Panels and numeric pagers

Logan, if the panel is not configured to communicate via DTMF
(telephone touch-tones, otherwise known as dual-tone multi-frequency)
protocol to a pager, the pager won't recognize the data being sent to
it. This may be why you are not getting data- the panel is only
dialing DTMF, and is thereafter communicating via an alarm receiver
format such as Contact ID, which is a type of FSK (Frequency Shift
Keying) signal. This type of signaling requires that a receiver
"answer" a "handshake" before communicating in this proprietary
format. You may be getting stuck at the "handshake" attempt, since
there is no receiver answering the panel's attempt at communication.

I manually answered my cellphone when the panel called me. I heard it
start to dial DTMF and I could recognize the leading digit 5 when it
started to dial the tones, so its able to dump DTMF. You may be right
about it getting confused, it might not know what to do with the
voicemail instructions, as that might confuse it. The panel does have a
pager mode, which is what I am using. Also of interest, is if it did NOT
press the leading five, it would have just dumped a bunch of DTMF into my
voicemail which has not happened at all. Another possibility is its just
not dumping anything at all and its giving up due to confusion.

You're confusing the "dialing string", which always uses DTMF, and the
"communication string", which is usually FSK. Your panel may be dialing DTMF
tones (you said you could hear it) and switching to FSK (as alarm panels
will when they're looking for a receiver) waiting for a "handshake". I
suspect that, if your panel is indeed capable of true DTMF format pager
communication, that it's not programmed to work properly and is looking for
an alarm receiver handshake because it's still programmed as a standard
alarm communication format. Alarm systems don't just "dump" a signal into an
central station receiver- they interactively communicate with it. Double
check your programming.
