Major success for police: Hizbul Mujahideen commanders surrender in Kashmir

Relentless pressure on militants in Doda has started yielding results
as a number of top commanders have surrendered or have been liquidated
by the local police and army working jointly.

In yet another major success, two top Hizbul commanders surrendered
today thus giving another boost to the efforts of security forces.

Bowing to sustained pressure of local police and security forces, two
commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen active in district Doda since the last
ten years surrendered before the police today morning.

Jahangir and Bilal, both surrendered before local police and 4
Rashtriya Rifles along with arms and ammunition which included 2 AK-47
rifles, 10 magazines, 300 rounds, 1 wireless set, 1 pouch and large
quantities of incriminating material.

Police said that the surrender of these two commanders was a major
success for the security forces as it will break the operational
hierarchy of Hizbul Mujahideen's network in District Doda.

Here it must be mentioned that militants operating in the district are
facing a lot of heat due to the concerted operations launched by Doda
police in collaboration with Army and other security forces.

As a result of the police action the number of militant organizations
active in district Doda has come down to only 3 from earlier 20.

Talking to Merinews, SSP Doda, Manohar Singh said that only three
groups which included Laskhar-e-Taiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Harkat-ul-
jihad-e-islami were active in the area. "Compared to 700 plus active
militants in the district, the number has come down to 350 and is
still descending", he added.

In an interesting revelation, he informed that the highest number of
militant neutralization was seen in 1996, when 206 militants were
killed but 2006-07 has also brought same success for Doda police as
177 militants have been killed till date.

However, the police success story is not all gun and gore but it is
also the result of a sustained public relations exercise done by the
department which resulted in the surrender of a number of top and
lower level militants. Doda police chief informed that the surrender
policy announced by the government proved a handy tool in bringing the
misguided youth back into the national mainstream.

Here it must be mentioned that a top Lashkar militant, Abu Hafiz alias
Bashir Ahmed Malla of Kothi village in Doda district had surrendered
before police and security forces in Doda town on August 23. He laid
down some ammunition and explosives and was active since 2003 in
Bharat, Kulhand, Desa and Kothi areas of Doda district.
