Katsav attorney: President will fulfill promise, suspend himself

President Moshe Katsav will fulfill his obligation to suspend himself in
the wake of Attorney General Menachem Mazuz's decision to charge him
over allegations of sexual assault and rape, Katsav's lawyer David Libai
said Tuesday at a press conference in Tel Aviv.

Libai said that Katsav would remain on leave until Mazuz reached a final
decision on the matter, following the hearing.

"The president of the state will convene a press conference on
Wednesday, and I am convinced that the president will stand behind what
we relayed in his name to the High Court of Justice," Libai said in
response to a question on the matter.

"The president will give notice with regard to the continuation of his
tenure" on Wednesday, Libai said.

Katsav's attorneys some two months ago gave the High Court of Justice
the president's word that he would suspend himself as soon as a basic
decision was reached to bring him to trial, before the hearing.

In addition, Katsav promised to resign if a final decision was reached
to indict him following the hearing, in order to allow for a trial to be
held on the matter.

Katsav's lawyers Libai and Zion Amir said during the press conference on
Wednesday that they would present Mazuz will new evidence during the
hearing.
