The temple was evidently at the centre of a cult involving idol worship. The
presiding deity was Hubal, a large carnelian statue kept inside the temple;
36o other idols were ranged outside. The three goddesses described in the
Quran as the 'daughters of Allah' - Allat, 'Uzza and Manat - were also
