Cuba Sets Event to Mark International Day against Torture
Havana, 27 June (RHC)--.The United Nations designated International
Day in support of victims of Torture, June 26th, will be marked in
Cuba on June 30th by an event to be held in the Casa de Las Americas
in Havana. The opening speech will be given by Carlos Amat, General
Director of the United Nations Cuban Association.
Olga Salnueva, wife of Rene Gonzalez, one of the Five Cubans
incarcerated in US prisons will talk about the ill-treatment suffered
by the five after their arrest and the continuing torture experienced
by family members of the Five due to denials and delays by US
Immigrations in issuing visas to travel to the US to visit their loved
ones.
The President of the Cuban Parliament, Ricardo Alarcón, will give an
update on the case and is expected to name a date in the near future
for an International Day of support for the release of the Five.
The event will finish up with a showing of the eight minute Cuban
documentary "Ivette" about the seven year old daughter of Olga and
Rene, directed by Lourdes de los Santos.
Sounds great. Will the thousands of victims tortured over the years by
Castro get a chance to speak, too? Those that are still able to, that
is?
