Here are some the main qualifying phrases, adjectives, and epithets
applied to the Arabic word Huur (i.e. "houris") in various Qur'an
verses (a lot of the adjectives in these passages have feminine
endings in the original Arabic, which makes the meaning rather
unambiguous):

44:54, 52:20, 56:22 Huur `iin "having (large) contrasty eyes" (whiter
whites and black pupils), where Huur is presumably originally a plural
color adjective

it's not just "presumably" but quite straighforwardly a color / bodily
characterstic adjective plural, which can be used as a noun.

english houri, turkish hu^ri is from persian Hu:re: > Hu:ri: which is a
singular back formation where -e: > -i: forms a noun of unity, one
among, a certain (persian and turkish don't have grammatical gender).
the later arabic back formation is Hu:riyya(t) (fem.) which may in turn
form a plural Hu:riyya:t . the resemblance betweenthearabic and persian
suffixes is coincidental.


55:72 maqSuuraat "restrained, confined" (feminine plural adjective)

55:56, 55:74 lam yaTmithhunna "No one has deflowered them" (the
pronoun "them" has a grammatically feminine form)

55:56 qaaSiraat-uT-Tarfi "restraining the glance" (i.e. with downcast
eyes -- the adjective in this phrase is grammatically feminine plural)

56:23 ka'amthaal-il-lu'lu'i 'l-maknuun "remembling a secret (or
well-guarded) pearl"
