Because of an added edict that
uses the ones that accept it to control or eliminate ones that didn't .
The meme became self perpetuating. The end result is more that accept it
because of elimination from the gene pool of the less inclined toward
belief and servitude.
The religions are full of praise for follwers and promises of reward
both in this life and the proposed afterlife for the ones that submit
and serve and plenty of promises of rewards for those that destroy or
ostracize unbelievers that don't serve or submit.
